AMCC Unveils High-Speed, Low Cost PowerPC Processor for Networking Applications; 440GR Processor Offers Increased Speed, Memory Performance and Dual Fast Ethernet

SAN FRANCISCO—(BUSINESS WIRE)—March 7, 2005— At the Microprocessor Summit, Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) (NASDAQ:AMCC) will today introduce a new high-speed PowerPC(R) processor targeted at networking and storage control plane applications. Based on the PowerPC 440 superscalar core, the low cost AMCC 440GR offers increased processor speed, memory performance and integrated dual Fast Ethernets. Ideal for line card, system control and multi-radio devices, the AMCC 440GR operates at a clock frequency of up to 667 MHz.

The AMCC 440GR requires one-third less power than any other member of the 440 family, making it ideal for low power applications. The AMCC 440GR's dual Fast Ethernet controllers function at full or half duplex at 10/100 Mbps. They are configurable as one MII, two RMII, or two SMII ports with a packet reject interface. Along with a 65 percent increase in performance over AMCC's 405GPr, the AMCC 440GR also supports double data rate memory (DDR266) with a peak bandwidth of 1.1 Gbps. Optional ECC support is also provided. In addition, the 440GR supports a 32-bit PCI revision 2.2 compliant interface with multiple read pre-fetch and write post buffers and the ability to boot the processor from PCI bus memory. The 440GR's external bus controller provides support for up to 6 ROM, EPROM, SRAM, Flash or slave peripheral I/O devices. The 440GR also incorporates a DMA controller with four independent channels supporting memory-to-memory, peripheral-to-memory and memory-to-peripheral block transfers.

Other on-chip peripherals on the AMCC 440GR include two IIC controllers, one bootstrap controller (BSC) and one SPI Serial Communications Port (SCP), up to 10 external interrupts, general purpose timers, 53 GPIO pins and four UARTs to support various functions in user applications.

"We are very excited about the addition of the AMCC 440GR to our current portfolio of feature-rich processors. The AMCC 440GR is a great choice for new storage and networking applications as well as an excellent growth path for existing 405xx users requiring increased processor speed, memory performance, and Fast Ethernet at a low cost," commented Sam Fuller, AMCC's vice president of marketing, Embedded Products.

AMCC's PowerPC processors are supported by AMCC and more than 100 third-party vendors who provide a full range of software, boards and tools necessary for manufacturers to develop products quickly and efficiently. The AMCC 440GR will be shipping in the second quarter of 2005. For additional technical information, visit http://www.amcc.com/BestInClass/PowerPC440GR.
